THE TOP 6 MUST SEE SIGHTS IN HAVANA, CUBA
We visited Havana in February 2014. Havana is wonderful chaos - crumbling colonial streets, mixed with more modern (50/60's era) buildings, old school cars, a glorious malecon (waterfront) and revolution-era sights.
1. Cars from another time!
2. Havana's Atmospheric Streets
3. The Big Fortress across the water: Morro Castle
Morro Castle fortress guards the entrance of Havana's harbour. Situated across the water from the city, it gives great views back to Havana's Malecon.
4. Castillo de la Real Fureza
5. Hotel Nacionale de Cuba
For a bit of old school 50s glam, the Hotel Nationale is the place to go in Havana. Its a grand old building, constructed in the 1930s, that many famous guests have stayed in. We were meant to stay here while in Havana, but in keeping with Cuba's lack of understanding as to Western standards of hospitality, we turned up to find our reservation had been lost and the hotel fully booked up - no attempts made to accomodate us, although we were on our honeymoon. Not that we let it ruin anything. We ended up finding a more interesting homestay and it became a bit of a joke for Cuban standards generally. We did go back for drinks, dinner and a show one night though. The hotel grounds overlook the Malecon and harbour, and theres generally live music, which makes it a nice spot for some afternoon sun. We had drinks out on the terrace before heading inside to their grand old-school dining room. Decent food for Cuba (the rest of our trip was considerably more average) and their flan for dessert was divine! After dinner, we headed downstairs to the old-school nightclub and watched their nightly Parisian Cabaret - something from a different era and a bit of fun.
6. Havana's Revolutionary Sights
Cuba's national pride and revolutionary spirit is displayed throughout Havana, with the Cuban flag and pictures of revolutionary leaders, including Che and Castro, appearing throughout the city. The depiction of Western leaders (pictured below) at the National Museum was also particularly amusing.
